ZSystem Hardware

ZSystem Hardware

ZSystem has a standard hardware configuration to ensure Consistency, Reliability & Safety.

The hardware philosophy is to utilize modern technology in a modular fashion.

The modular nature allows failures to be replaced with similar alternatives.

Components may vary depending on availability & personal preference.

To ensure higher safety standards - No mains voltages are exposed.

(Double insulated mains wiring and consumer grade plugs are used)

Note: ZSystem Hardware is not intended to run Arcade CRT / Original PCB's.

Connection Standards

1 Jamma (1985: Includes expansion harnesses, Neo-Geo MVS & Jamma+ variants)

2 JVS (1996: Utilized by modern Arcade systems with specific communications protocols - USB Interface)

3 HID (1997: Utilizes intelligent modular peripherals with standard HID class protocols - USB Interface)

ZSystem uses the USB HID connection standard for simplicity and future compatibility.

Why not to use Jamma

Many modern day cabinets come equipped with Jamma which is fine if your running an original Arcade game PCB*

The problem is most people are not running original Arcade game PCB's and are instead running xxxin1 PCB's.

While you may feel happy using a xxxin1 PCB's due to it's use of the (old) Jamma standard connector,

You should also be aware that xxxin1 pcb's are morally questionable & technically inferior.

* Original Arcade / JPac system / Custom PCB.

Generic Cabinet

ZSystem hardware can be used in either Upright or Cocktail configurations.

Main CPU

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_OptiPlex

2~3 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 2~4 GB Ram provides enough power for most games.

Large fan and heat sink assembly provides low rpm cooling and increased operational lifetime.

Intel G31/G41 Express Chipset Ensures suitable GL capability and extra reliability as an on board video component.

Dell Optiplex 330, 360, 380

Video Display

19" LCD LED Arcade Monitor

(Vision Pro or Cheaper alternative)

Warning

Try not to use a desktop or decased consumer LCD - Besides viewing issues,

They are often unreliable, overheat and are usually awkward to mount or remove.

Suzo Happ: Vision Pro 19" LCD

Ebay: 19 VGA LCD LED Arcade

DVI connection is preferred (Typically dual input VGA/DVI).

Viewing angle and Brightness are critical in Arcade displays,

"Arcade Monitors" are designed to display the required view angle / brightness and also have a

greater frequency operating range, Essential for correctly matching original arcade refresh rates.

Audio System

Audio Kit, Speakers and Power Supply

(Excluding wiring)

Warning

Try not to use 20/25 Watt audio amps available on ebay, Watch these bench tests to see why!

You are more likely to get 2~5 watts RMS and some pretty heavy clipping when driven even moderately.

Operator Controls

To enable access to operator menus and settings an operator control panel should be used.

(If system maintenance is required then a keyboard may be attached for console access and administration)

All the controls required to manage game dip switches and other settings can be mounted on a simple control panel.

Usually the operator control panel is located inside the door or close to the main CPU.

Operator control panel overlay

Operator control panel notes

Four inputs are required, Three shiftable and one as the shift.

  • Pre 2015 IPAC Buttons 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B are NOT shiftable. Though they are able to operate as the shift key.
  • The absence of UI Select (Enter) is supplemented by assigning UI Select to player 1 button 1 aka LCONTROL.
  • The UI Clear function can be performed by selecting the entry then using UI Cancel (Escape) to clear it.

For compatability (Pre 2015) the (usually unused) 1sw7, 1sw8, 2sw7, 2sw8 buttons are assigned to the operator control panel.

(Newer ipac2's are able to use 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B as shifted keys for assigning to the operator control panel)

Interface Input

IPAC-2, Keywiz, Zero Delay, Xin Mo.

(IPAC-2 Firmware without the Game Controller device)

IPAC-2 is the preferred input device

Interface Output

USB2Controller, LPT, Pac-Drive, PacLed64 etc.

ZSystem keeps complexity to a minimum by only using USB2Controller to enable/disable the credit system.

Though it is up to the individual if they want to include extras such as LED buttons and multi way restrictors.

USB2Controller

Credit System

Credit mechanism, Lockout and Counter

Whether it be by Tokens or Coins, The use of a credit mechanism gives value to each game played.

The Tokens or Coins may be free, But the act of physically inserting one is more meaningful than pressing a free play button.

Standard electronic multi coin mechanism

C&C Credit Lockout & Counter PCB

Locks out credits while in menu mode.

Counts credits while in game mode.

Mains Power

EMI Filter, Earth Pole, Power distribution.

Warning

Every credible arcade/pinball/jukebox should have a fused EMI filter for safe & reliable operation.

An Earth Pole and Ground harness to all exposed metal is required for safety standards of most countries.

A professional quality universal power distribution board is recommended over home style power outlets.
